Home Heating Tips for Cooler Weather

Cooler weather dictates that home owners make a safety check of their heating equipment. Faulty heating equipment plays a part in over 40% of winter home fires. One can reduce home fire risks by safely maintaining and operating a furnace, space heater or wood stove. A good place to start the process is to review the equipment's owners manual for routine maintenance requirements.

Next, maintain a safety edge by engaging the services of a qualified technician to inspect the major appliances that heat a home: gas and oil furnaces. Have them pay particular attention to flue and exhaust components of the system. Sometimes debris, birds or small critters can block them and create a hazardous situation. Never store flammables or debris close to a furnace or hot water heater.

Supplemental heating units (e.g. electrical space heaters, fireplaces, kerosene heaters and wood stoves) can be dangerous. Look for UL approved electrical appliances. More complex devices should be installed by a competent professional. Keep space heaters away from hallways and doorways (where they can be knocked over) and away from bedding, clothing, draperies, towels, upholstered furniture and other flammable items. Unplug them before you go to sleep.

On the insurance side of this issue, be certain fire coverage and dollar limits are adequate on your homeowner's policy. When in doubt, stop by or give us a call. A customer service representative can quickly access your policy electronically, and offer the trusted advice you have come to expect from our agency.
